Wedding Day

"It wasn't supposed to be like this," she mumbled. Leila sighed and hitched up her wedding gown, trudging through the wreckage that surrounded her. She found a window seat close by and sat on the edge of it, her high heeled foot tapping the ledge erratically.

"What a day."

Feeling around the waist of her dress, she found the fanny pack she had stowed underneath the bustle. Eva often wondered why they made the back part of the dress so large.

"There was no need to remind me that I lack an ass," she huffed. She dug through it and found a pack of clove cigarettes and a lighter.

She knows she promised her future husband that she'd lay off the cigarettes, but stress is stress. Better to  have a socially acceptable outlet than doing something risky. Leila snorted in amusement. Risky.

In one smooth movement she flicked it open, lit it and closed it. She took a deep pull and exhaled slowly. The smoke drifted lazily from her parted lips as she surveyed the scene. The sanctuary was in shambles. Pews overturned, decorations torn asunder, wedding guests unconscious.

"Can't even let me have a decent day without it turning into an unnecessary donnybrook."

Putting the cigarette out on the nearest vase, she stood up. She fussed with her dress, hitching and pinning up parts that were dragging.

"Don't need these anymore, I guess." She kicked her heels off, one foot at a time. The red bottomed heels sailed in a graceful arc down the aisle, landing with a clunk.

"Now let's see if my Maid of Honor fulfilled their duty..."

Leila made her way to the fallen lectern, looking left and right. Not too far away from it, the reverend was knocked out cold, his blood slowly trickling from a head wound. She looked around for something to dab at the wound. The mantle around his neck. Desperate times, and she was sure that Jesus could forgive her. Well, someone has to. Leila swept the mantle off his shoulders, folded it over and gently wiped the blood away from his hairline.

"I better hurry up," she mumbled. Behind the lectern, there was a duffel bag peeking out amongst the wreckage.

There it is. Unzipping it, she found what she was hoping for. All her weapons. She could kiss her Maid of Honor. Matter of fact, she did a few nights ago -- it was not the time to reminisce.

Leila grabbed a garter belt which housed knives and slipped it on. Her training took over and began to load the pistols without a single hitch.

Suddenly, the sanctuary door began to shudder. A booming sound followed each thud. Someone was trying to break in. Leila positioned the lectern as a barricade and hid behind it. Checking her weapons once more, she sighed deeply.

"Guess I'm not meant to have one of those nice, normal lives."
